To my colleagues in the industry:
Please allow me to share with you the most challenging and fearful event
in the life of my family that happened two fridays ago , August 11,
2006.
My son , Patrick S. Mayo, 19 year old , who just barely arrived in
Manila a month ago ( as he was in the states for a year to study ) was
confined in the hospital last August 11, 2006. He was diagnosed for this
dreadful disease called " Dengue " . A very popular disease especially
during this rainy season but to most of us may not be so aware/
conscious of it.
My son actually was given 50- 50 chance to survive. I never knew that he
was that critical until the doctor mentioned that he was having an
internal bleeding. Patrick initially was having fever for two days and
when he was admitted to the hospital he was diagnozed to be suffering
from Dengue . You can not believe how this disease can spread the
virus so fast in the body system . My son had gum bleeding at
first. And soon his blood platelete is going down so fast that he
needed blood transfussion immediately . The next day , he was already
having internal hemmorage. A tube has to be inserted to his stomach
passing through his nose and throat to get down to his stomach to suck
out the clot of blood caused by the virus. Immediately my son was
brought to the Intensive Unit Care ( ICU ) . And of course, this is the
very critical stage where my doctor was telling me that my son had 50
-50 chance of surviving. You can just imagine the anxiety and fear we
all felt that time.
Twenty four hours is a matter of life or death for my son. . .
Miraculously, my son survived. Three things i attributed for the
survival of my son. One, Patrick's resistance is quite strong and
his willingness to survive. Two, he was attended by a good doctor and
three, Prayers.
When friends from my rotary club learned about it , classmates and
friends from high school and relatives all over had their prayer
brigade almost all at the same time and masses were offered to
different churches for the safety of my son. ( thanks to text messaging
, connection was made easier) And soon enough , my son's condition
became better. And the next day his condition became stable. Three days'
stay in the ICU and he was brought back to his room . And of course he
is back home now recuperating since four days ago. By the way , my son
had around 30 bags of blood transfussion.
A classmate of my son , named Ged Marravilla from elementary and high
school (Colegio San Agustin) who was admitted in the same hospital
three days earlier did not survive. He died two sundays ago. Another
girl aged six year old and another girl age thirteen years old did not
survive too. They died all at the same time and my son survived . My
friends call Patrick a piece of Miracle.
I did not have the chance to inform my friends from the industry and i
am sure that you would have shared your prayers too. And i am sharing
this experience so that we can be more aware of this dreadful disease.
Dengue is a very treacherous disease. A person can be sick for two
days and on the third day his fever is gone but thats when the body
resistance is getting weak and the virus is fast spreading in the body
system . Please dont take this for granted. It only takes less than a
weak for a person to survive or die . This disease can afflict people
from all walks of life , from the very poor to the most affluent. From
the very young to the most elderly . So please let us all be aware if
not more aware of this disease. God bless you all.
Best rgds,
Alice Mayo
